News from the PTR : Intellect > Spirit Regen

Kirk, over at Priestly Endeavors has a great post on how to apply this math and what it all means. Definitely worth the read!

I managed to get my Druid copied yesterday and got to check things out a bit. Hopefully later in the week as more of my guildies get over I’ll be able to report more on the new 25 man.For the next few days, I’ll be writing about my findings. Today it’s one of the things I was most curious about.

Spirit-Based Mana Regeneration: This system has been adjusted so that as your intellect rises, you will regenerate more mana per point of spirit.

There’s been some extremely math heavy theory-crafting going on on Elitist Jerks on a formula. Thankfully someone made a spreadsheet to help me muddle through all the math. For those who just want to see what their new regen will be here is a link to the spreadsheet (source). Let me say I take no credit for actually figuring this out and any of the pure data in this article. Only for reading through everything at EJ and doing my best to separate the true from the false and present it in a more coherent way. Now onto how it works!
(If you are more interested in the conclusions than the actual math jump down a bit!)

Information Needed :

  • Your Intellect
  • Your Spirit
  • Your static MP5 from items (only necessary to tag on at the end if you want your complete regen)

Step 1

X = Intellect^0.5

The ^ denotes the exponent operator part of the formula, and figures into how Intellect increases your MP5 in relation to spirit exponentially. In simple terms its your Intellect to the 1/2 power.

I have 523 Intellect
523^0.5 = 22.869
X = 22.869

Step 2

Y = Spirit + 0.001

Blizzard rounds your MP5 up and to make sure this happens in our formula we do the above.

I have 455 Spirit
455 + 0.001 = 455.001
Y = 455.001

Step 3

Z = Y * 0.009327

This is the magic number from Blizzard to get your mana regen, not casting and not effected by intellect at level 70 (this number changes based on level, so don’t try applying this formula to your level 49 twink!).

455.001 * 0.009327 = 4.244
Z = 4.244

Step 5

Z * X = MP1
MP1 * 5 = MP5

4.244 * 22.869 = 97.051
MP1 = 97.051

97.051 * 5 = 485.260
MP5 = 485.260

Our Results

The entire formula can be expressed like this:

((0.001+SPIRIT*0.009327*(INT^0.5))*5*0.3,0)

Our new MP5 From Spirit (while NOT casting) is : 485
Our New MP5 From Spirit While Casting (multiply your MP5 by .3 to get this value) = 145

I am gonna go ahead and tag on my MP5 from gear which is 161.

Total MP5 While Not Casting = 646
Total MP5 While Casting = 306

Now you are probably wondering how much I gained compared to the live servers. I gained 50 MP5 while casting and 169 MP5 while not casting. Quite a big jump!

What it means for you

Now you are probably thinking all that math is well and good (and very confusing) but what does it actually mean for me? What value do Intellect and Spirit hold against pure MP5 with this change? Since everything scales based on your own stats there is no right answer to that. So I’ve put together a couple of tables so you can see the value of Spirit and Intellect with your Current Stats.

The above may look confusing but what it shows is this: If I have 500 Intellect and 500 Spirit I would gain .52 MP5 from 1 Intellect or 1.04 Mp5 from 1 Spirit. Before you get TOO excited this applies to time not casting :) While casting I would receive .312 MP5 from 1 Spirit or .156 from 1 Intellect. You’ll notice when your intellect is half of your spirit, 800/400 for example, your benefit from intellect and spirit is equal. This the magic ratio where your regen is optimal. More on this over at Priestly Endeavors.

Above is another way of looking at it. This shows the total mana you will gain over the course of an 8 minute fight from +1 Spirit or +1 Intellect. You can see Intellect performs a lot better here and you see a lot more realistic ratio’s for optimal mana received from both intellect and spirit and even one where it’s equal 400/400.

The theorycrafting here is still in its early stages, but the data so far seems to be very accurate. It also appears all casters are created equal when it comes to spirit regen now and only our talents seperate us, I haven’t confirmed this but will keep you posted as I find out more.

I will work on getting the excel sheets I used for the above data up if there is interest. However, most of the information and formulas I used can be found over at Elitist Jerks!

    Very good analysis.

    The new changes look to be a major buff to resto druids, although this properly wont cause resto to change from stacking spirit, and healing. This looks like it will only highten the longevity resto druids are known for, and sought after for. The change will also help out priests quite a bit as well, not to the extent as resto druids, but never the less it will give them more mp5 inside 5SR, and outside 5SR.

    Its definitely a huge buff and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was toned down a bit. My only theory is that haste seems to be the new “IT” stat and they needed a way to make room for it for classes that rely a lot on regen.
